Abstract

The present study was carried out on 60 patients classified into: 33 cases of leukemia (20 cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 13 cases of acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia) and 27 cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. They were admitted to the oncology unite of the pediatric department, Assiut University Hospital. also eleven apparently healthy children of matchable age and sex were included as a control group.
All cases and controls were thoroughly examined. Patients were subjected to complete peripheral haemogram, bone marrow examination, chest x-ray, abdominal sonography and biopsy from accessible masses.
For patients and controls serum levels of lipid peroxides, superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity, total thiols, ceruloplasmin (CAER) and nitric oxide (NO) were assessed.
Serum SOD enzyme activity levels were significantly higher in ALL with than without chest infection, in ANLL with than without gingival infiltration and in NHL with than without generalized lymphadenopathy.
Serum total thiols levels were significantly higher in cases of NHL with pallor or heart failure than in their absence and in ALL with fever than cases without fever.
