Abstract

Periods of profound immuno-suppression render cancer patients susceptible to infections. Diarrhea is a frequent complication of cytotoxic chemotherapy; it may be caused by several factors including conventional pathogens, suppression of normal intestinal flora and overgrowth of certain pathogens as well as non infectious causes such as mucositis.

The aim of the present work was:
The aim of this study is to;
Define the roles of various infectious agents in symptomatic gastroenteritis in pediatric oncology patients receiving chemotherapy and to determine the morbidity and mortality in relation to different agents

The present study comprised 30 pediatric oncology patients with symptomatic gastroenteritis admitted to the Hematology-oncology unit; pediatric hospital, Ain-Shams University during the period of 13 months (from June 2006 to August 2007). They were 21 male and 9 female, their mean ages were 6.35±4.47 years ranging from 0.83-14 years. Complete history taking and clinical examination as concerns type of malignancy, state of disease whether in relapse or in complete remission and presence of associated infections or medical conditions. The clinical examination included sings of dehydration, sepsis and signs of bleeding.
The following laboratory methods were done:
1. Complete blood picture with differential count.
2. Stool microscopy for red and white blood cells, parasitic cysts and ova examination.
3. Ordinary stool culture for both bacterial and fungal pathogens.
4. specialized stool cultures including:
i. Campylobacter agar base.
ii. Aeromonas agar base.
