Abstract

Cancer is considered by most people to be a life threatening disease for which the prognosis is poor. Physical changes that influence the appearance may involve loss of body parts, scarring disfigurement, or having to adjust to prosthesis and altered body image. There is also a lifelong fear of recurrence or being taken ill with a new form of cancer. (Bertero, 2002)

Women diagnosed with cancer may experience unique stresses related to loss of fertility, changes in body image, various social role, sexual concerns and altered relationships with significant others. (Lindberg, et al, 2004)

Meanwhile the recurrent phase of breast cancer is an extremely difficult time for women and their family members. Although much attention has been directed to the medical management of breast cancer, little information is available about the psychosocial aspects of recurrent breast cancer. (Frost et al, 2000)

Hall et al, showed that the majority of women with early breast cancer experienced anxiety and/or depression within 3 months of their initial surgery. In addition, they identified anxiety disorder in 49.6% of women with breast cancer and depressive illness in 37.2% during the first 3 months after their initial surgery (Hall et al., 1999).
