Abstract

The management of medically intractable epilepsy remains a difficult problem, and current therapeutic options are limited to ablative brain surgery or trials of experimental antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve has recently emerged as a novel therapy for localization onset epilepsy. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and AEDs (valproate, and lamotrigine) on the level of neurotransmitters (GABA, glutamate, and nitric oxide (NO)), and Electroencephalogram (EEG) changes on experimentally induced seizures in rats. The study was carried out on 60 male albino rats divided into 6 groups, each consists of 10 rats. In the control group, an experimentally induced seizure was done, in group II, VN was stimulated before seizures induction, group III. I.P. injection of valproate was administered before VNS followed by seizures induction, group IV, lamotrigine was administered before VNS followed by seizures induction, group V, valproate was administered followed by seizures induction, and group VI, lamotrigine was administered followed seizures induction.
