Abstract

The chemotherapeutic drugs which are used for the treatment of cancer are known to produce serious oral complications that affect the patients’ life quality leading to severe morbidity, infection, prolonged hospitalization, and may delay the cancer treatment. Death can sometimes results from severe oral complications.

The main aim of this study was to assess the oral complications of chemotherapy in pediatric cancer patients, find the possible factors that affect the severity of these complications, and study the effect of vitamin “E” in the treatment of oral mucositis.

The frequencies of chemotherapy-associated oral complications in pediatric cancer patients were determined in 150 subjects receiving standard chemotherapy, 64 with solid tumors, and 86 with hematologic malignancies. They were all subjected to an interview and oral examination, data were collected in a specially designed sheet including: the Sociodemographic information, the general health information, the oral hygiene and dietary information, and the oral examination.

The oral pain and the dry mouth were the most frequent patients’ complaints. The incidence of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis was 53.3%. The frequency of oral infections was 48.7%. The caries experience was determined in 48% of the patients. 8.7% of the patients had spontaneous oral bleeding. The poor oral hygiene was a prominent feature in approximately 80% of the patients
The clinical findings observed in the present study were the consequences of the direct stomatotoxicity of the chemotherapeutic agents, the immunosuppression, the bone marrow suppression, the poor oral hygiene, the high caries index, and the abuse of systemic antibiotics.
