Abstract

IDDM is one of the most frequent chronic diseases of childhood .Its management in children should include regular assessment, careful monitoring of glycemic control and educational training on disease management). The aim of this work is to evaluate the ability of the educational programme to enhance patient’s self-care behavior, to audit the structure, process, and outcome of care. Patients and Methods: The study is a prospective randomized study of 100 diabetic patients below the age of 18 years old. conducted at the Diabetes Endocrine Metabolic Pediatric Unit (DEMPU) of Cairo University Children’s Hospital. Patients were selected from those regularly attending the diabetic education programme. The programme was conducted by a diabetes specialist, a nurse, and dietician with special experience in nutrition of diabetes and was composed of 4 sessions (90-120 minute each) over a total period of 4 weeks. The main results: About 76% of the studied cases suffered hypoglycemic attacks and47%of the studied cases had DKA in the last year prior to the study. Scholastic and educational performance of more than 61% of the studied cases was affected after developing DM. 71% of the studied cases developed psychological problems.66%were poor glycemic control .Conclusion: the strong points of the education programme at our DEMPU were identified as the diet of patients, sports and importance of regular attendance of follow up clinics while the weak points were the information of nature of IDDM, types of syringes and types of insulin used. Information about hypo and hyperglycemic symptoms and information about HbA1c were also markedly limited.
