Abstract

This thesis presents the vapour absorption system based on water as a refrigerant and lithium
‎bromide solution as the absorbent by applying natural gas, which is available, cheap, and clean as a
‎source of energy. The absorption system has shown good results for the two major impacts;
‎economical and environmental. From the environmental point of view, this can be considered as an
‎ideal solution for the problems concerning the usage of CFC, and its effects on the environment
‎where ISO 1400 I recommended a full prohibition for the usage of CFC for air conditioning
‎purposes by 2030.
‎The severity of the ozone layer destruction problem, due partly to CFCs and HCFCs, has been
‎calling for rapid development in CFC-free air conditioning technologies. With regard to energy use,
‎global wanning prevention requires a thorough revision of energy utilization practices towards
‎greater efficiency. From this perspective, absorption cooling research has drawn the attention of
‎many investigators, as it does not use ozone depleting substances as refrigerants as well as it can
‎minimize the use of fossil fuels produced electricity.
‎From the economics point of view, the cost analysis showed that the proposed system saves 92 % of
‎electricity power consumption and an overall saving of 33 % of total cost by using the
‎average annual cost comparison method. The analysis was applied on an air conditioning system of
‎a fixed steel platform by performing a parametric study. A comparison is performed between
‎compression air conditioning system and absorption air conditioning system.
