Abstract

The application feasibility of the lanthanide ions and organic ligand complexes is based on the fact that they can absorb ultraviolet radiation in the organic portion of the molecules and provides a sharp line emission in a red or green region with high efficiency via the subsequent intramolecular energy transfer to lanthanide ions. These complexes are used as new materials for the purpose of practical and technological uses to date.
This study deals with types of photochromism of the organic ligands for their potential applications. Moreover, energy transfer between some lanthanide ions, namely, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Sm3+ and heterocyclic photochromism are studied. The used ligands are [7`-hydroxy-8`-formyl-3-methyl-4-oxospiro[1,3-benzoxazin-2,2`-[2H-1]benzopyran],SO(I),[7`-hydroxy-8`-formyl-3-benzyl-4–oxospiro [1,3-benzoxazin-2,2`-[2H-1]benzopyran] SO(II), 1,3,3,8′-tetramethyl- 6′-formyl-7′-hydroxy-indolino-2-spiro-2′-[2Н]-chromene (SPI) and its 5-chloro derivative (SPII), 4,5-diphenyl-(2-hydroxyphenyl)imidazoles, TAIsI and 4,5-diphenyl-(2-hydroxynaphthyl)imidazole, TAIsII).
The thesis consists of six chapters:
Chapter one includes a general introduction about luminescence, factors affecting the luminescence, quenching of the luminescence intensity by water molecule and some examples on the applications of the lanthanide ions (Eu3+, Tb3+ and Sm3+) complexes and recent literature reviews in the field of this study.
