Abstract

The study aims to evaluate the activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs, both zircon and monazite contents the collected samples from beach sand deposits of east Rosetta. Also, a correlation between the calculated zircon and monazite radioactive mineral contents with the measured radioactive isotopes was carried out to determine the contribution of each mineral for radioactivity.

Non-destructive assay techniques were carried out using HpGe spectrometer and binocular microscope. Efficiency calibration was done for different energies covering the energy range of the assay for Hp Ge spectrometer.

Activities of individual nuclides in the 238U - 226Ra series, 232Th series, 40K and 137Cs concentrations were given in Bq kg-1 dry weight. The different mineralogical components of the studied 156 core beach samples calculated and the average contents of the two radioactive zircon and monazite economic minerals were evaluated.
The radioactivity measurements expressed in part per million (ppm) were correlated with the measured contents of individual zircon, monazite and both them. These correlations were made for all the collected samples of the studied area.
