Abstract Surgical wound infections continue to be a universal problem of maj or magnitude. The present study was under taken with the aims of estimatin~ oche incidence of surgical round infection in some general hospitals in Alexandria; estimating the cost of wound infections; determining the ’influence of certain patient, operation and hospital factors on the wound infection ra te; studying certain elements of ward. and operating-suite design and. practice that are known . I to have a bearing on the spread of infection; and assessing ilia efficiency of sterilization arid the knowledge of surgeons ~out the problem of wound infection. The study was conducted in 3 of Alexandria general hospitals; namely, Ras El Teen General Hospital, the Main University Hospital, and Gamal Abdel Nasser Hosptal. All J general surgical sections in Ras El Teen Hospital, ) ~ the 6 general surgical sections in the Main University ~spital, and the 3 general surgical sections excluding ilie first class wards in Abdel NasserHospital were included in the study.
