Abstract

In Egypt, maternal mortality and infant death rates are still high in spite of the fact that health care service for them are available and free of charge. On the other hand, better standard of antenatal care had contributed to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity in many parts of the world. Prenatal care provision is necessary to meet the needs of mothers during this stage. But it was found that, women attend antenatal clinics for curative purposes rather than education or prevention. The present study was designed to study the knowledge, attitude and practices of the pregnant women concerning antenatal care and factors influencing them. Also, to evaluate the health services delivered at the chosen MCH centers. The present study was carried out in two MCH centers in Birket El-Saba district, namely, Birket El-Saba health care and Birket El-Saba MCH center (representing urban areas) and two rural health units namely, El-Roda and El-Shahdeed Fekry rural health units (representing rural areas). The target population was there pregnant women attending the chosen centers for antenatal care during the period of the study. The total number of the studied women was 400. the data were collected by means of an interview questionnaire sheet conducted with each pregnant women. The study revealed that: - about three-fourths (73.25%) of the studied women were aged between 20 to less 35 years, whereas 13.75% and 13% were less than 20 and 35 years or more respectively.
