Abstract The potato (Solarium tuberosum, L.) is the most important non-world food crops, and is next only to rice, wheat and corn as a crop in terms of total food production (Bajaj, 1987). In Egypt, is ranked the second most important vegetable crop after tomato of value of production. Annual consumption per capita is about kg (El-Bedewy and Sharara, 1990). It has the capacity to produce : energy and protein per unit land than any other single food crop. Potatoes have a number of uses of which 3 0-72% being used for (FAO, 1984). It is primarily consumed as a source of fdrates along with rice and wheat, as a vegetable, or in the form fif fiench fries, woofers, chips, masked and boiled potato, and in soup. I* Itotato contains a satisfactory mixture of essential amino acids for feeding. Potato cultivation has been spread in Delta and recently in the reclaimed areas. According to 1994 statistics, a total area of about 154173 feddans was planted with potato as follows: (summer, autumn and mehayara seasons, i.e, 58184, 61712 and 34277 feddans, respectively) producing a total yield of 1786057 tonnes (Prof. Dr. M.Z. Abd El-Hak, personal communication). As a result of enormous increase in the country’s population, the pressure exerted on the demands for agricultural production is increasing steeply nowadays. |
