SUMMARY
The study aims at building up a geographic digital database related to Faculty of Agriculture (Saba Basha), Farmland on Abis area and saving it in the computer, then making an evaluation of the characteristics and prosperities of the soil. This plays a great role in choosing the best suitable kinds of crops to be grown on the study area.
This happens through coupling of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and the Evaluation Program used (Micro LEIS 2000) and also using the (GPS).
The study consisted of four main phases:
1- Data Preparation Stage: which included inputting maps of the study area that were carried out using the satellite images to facilitate using it by the Arc view program.
2- Field-work Stage: in this stage, the GPS was used to pinpoint the digging of soil profiles and surface samples and collecting it from the field-work in addition to collecting irrigation and drainage samples. The land profiles were described morphologically according to FAO 1990.
3- Laboratory Analysis Stage: which was directed to the analysis of the soil samples for chemical, physical and fertility and so the irrigation and drainage.
4-Data Analysis Stage: this was related to the analysis and manipulation and the results of the data to know the best way of using the soil.
The main results of this research are as following:
1- The analysis results showed that the soil in the study area has no difference in the chemical and physical characteristics.
2- The study area is characterized with the existence of shells in high
proportion. These shells are spread in all parts of the horizon profiles.
3- The study area is also characterized by the presence of high level of ground
water. Water table is found about less than 1m deep in all the dig profiles.
4- The study area has texture ranging from of clay loam to clay, but there are some other sandy layers. The proportion of the sand is from 23.7% to 41.8%.
5- The content of the soil organic matter (OM) and nutrients of the study area is moderate due to the intensive plant cover.
6- The results showed that the soils of the study area consist of four soil units. This was resulted from overlay process by using Arc view program for the following map soil map of soil salinity, SAR, carbonate content and texture
7- The results of the soil evaluation indicated that, the main limiting factors to crop suitability were soil depth, texture, and calcium carbonate content.
