Abstract Scabies is undoubtedly an ancient disease, for in the period of Babylon, Nineveh, Tyre and later in the Roman era baths in hot sulfur springs were known to cure scabies. (1) Nair in 1973 reported that in ancient India, 1000 B.C. kterya observed scabietic lesions; however, he could not recognize its origin. (2) Bonomo’s discovery in 1687 of the itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) marked scabies as the first disease in man with a known cause. Unfortunately it took two centuries before this was generally accepted, when Joseph Adams sent in 1805 a paper to the Royal Society of London noting :”...You will percieve that Bonomo was tolerably exact.” (3) Hebra, the father of modern Dermatology, delineated in 1868 much of the basic knowledge of scabies. He noted the relative unimportance of fomites in its transmission. However, it remained for Mellanby in 1944 to reintroduce the concept , a century later before the general acceptance achieved. (4) Heilesen’s monogranh in 1946 is another rich source of information on scabies. (5) The elegantly incisive |
