Abstract diarrheal diseases constitute one of the great¬est social evils. Not only do they ld.ll young children living in developing countries.but they also retard the growth and impair the quality of life of those who survive. The problem is overwhelming and complex: as it involves deep-rooted cultu¬ral and behavioral factors in addition to the more obvious social and economic inequalities. Despite of wide spread awareness of this problem, there has boen a lack of definite commitment to deal with it. Definition; Diarrhea is a disturbance of intestinal motility and absorption, which once and by whatever means initiated may become self-perpetuating as a disease through the production of dehydration and profound cellular disturbance, which in turn favour the continuing passage o;L” liquid stools (Ordway, I960)- The WHO study group on diarrheal diseases (1966) were on the opinion that diarrhea is a change in the number and/or change in the appearance of stools.
