Abstract

The most frequent metabolic disorder in old age is diabetes, in its non-insulin-dep endent form or type II,
Due to the ease of collection and testing, paper strip is the most common method used to adjust the quantity and frequency of oral hypoglycemic therapy in elderly diabetics. But the usefulness of this method depends on its accuracy in reflecting the blood glucose concentration, because knowledge of the plasma glucose level at any given time is critically important to control chronic complications of diabetes as well as to avoid acute complications.
To determine whether semiquantitative glucose measurements of spot urine specimens accurately reflect prevailing plasma glucose levels, this work compared reported levels from second-
v
voided urines to simultaneous plasma determinations from 20 middle-aged and 60 elderly diabetics chosen from the out patient geriatric clinic and diabetes clinic of Alexandria University Hospital. The majority of patients were obese females receiving oral hypoglycemic drugs.
