Abstract

Aim of this study was to assess the awareness of caregivers regarding autistic children (from 4-12 years). The study was conducted at Egyptian Autism society (Maddy), Higher Institute for children (Ain Shams University), Egypt Language School and Junior Special schools. The sample was composed of 150 children with autism.
Data were collected through interviewing questionnaire, record of autistic children from centers, schools, and clinic such as medical records, speech and language assessment records etc……….. and observation check list. The study revealed that autistic children affect males more than girls and some health problems as aggression, poor in scholastic achievement, poor in social interaction, repetitive behavior, hyperactivity, emotional and communication problems. The study represented that statistically, there was highly significant between caregiver’s educational level and practice awareness regard AC, there was a relation between high socioeconomic standard and AC follow up in special schools, health centers and society. Also revealed that there was no statistical significant difference formal caregiver’s knowledge and informal caregiver’s need, problems and adjustment. The study recommended that, early detection and diagnosis, raise families and caregivers awareness about autism and caring of these children as well as medical, nursing, educational, psychological, social, behavioral and emotional needs and supports.
