Abstract Pollution is the major problem of outdoor insulation of the electric power transmission networks. Live line washing is one of the measures to overcome that problem. This thesis aims to study the factors that affect the performance of polluted insulators during live line washing. It aims to find an efficient and simple way for the removal of pollution from the insulator surfaces and the possibility of usage of ordinary water. Also. It is directed to deduct the discharge mechanism of this process. This thesis contains seven chapters. Chapter no.(1) includes an introduction about the study objects and explanation of live line washing techniques. Chapter (2) includes statistical review of faults and pollution faults in the Egyptian high voltage overhead transmission network. Chapter (3) includes a review of the previous work and literature. Chapter (4) includes a description of different types and techniques of live line washing used in this thesis. The following types were used: 1-Fixed system, which consists of different diameter nozzles that direct water to insulators surfaces. These nozzles are fixed on a frame supported on a transmission tower. A high- pressure pump delivers water to nozzles through pipes fixed on tower legs. The water is supplied from one cubic metre capacity tank supported under the tower. 2-Portable system that depends on using light weight equipment loaded on a four wheel drive truck. These |
