Abstract

In recent years more insight into the biological functions of acute phase proteins has been obtained. Protease binding properties of alphai—antitrypsin and haptoglobin—hemoglobin complex are recognized, ceruloplasmin can operate as a free radical scavenger and thus shows antioxidant effectiveness. Alpha2-macroglobulin is a protein with a very broad spectrum of protein binding capacities.
As all the proteins are synthesized mainly by the liver cells, so this study evaluated the pattern of some acute phase proteins in both acute and chronic liver diseases.
Fifty patients with different liver diseases (chronic and acute) were selected from Am Shams Specialized 4ospital, and twenty healthy controls were subjected to:
- Estimation of four acute phase proteins: alpha,— antitrypsin, alpha2—macroglobulin, haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin using Behring NOR—Partigen immunodiffusion plates.
- Estimation of serum alkaline phosphatase,
aminotransferases and albumin by “Beckman Synchron Clinical Sys tern 0X5”.
