Abstract

In the present ’Work the possible applications of a series
of semiconducting calcium borate glasses containing ir-on oxide
as memory and switching devices, as meta1-g1ass-meta1 devices,
and as op t acaI mass memories are in’vestigated. The d. c. & a.c.
electrlcal reslstivitles, dielectric constant, dielectric loss,
and optlcal properties of the glass system are reported in order
to reach concluslve conduction models of the system to apply it
to interpret the behavior of the studied applications.
The glass series contains different iron concentrations in the
system of molar compositlon (70-x) B203 - 30 CaO-xFe203. The
reported electronlC properties are measured from 770K to 8000K
in the frequency range of 20 cIs to 900 MC/s. The optical
absorption measurements are in the range 400 - 4000 cm (25-
2.5 ~m) at room temperature. The work has proved that our glass
system is a semlconducting one, and that the glasses are electronlcally
cond cting, The experimental results of the electronic
properties support the idea of having the following models of
conduction:
al a hopping conduction mechanism, for the glasses containing
less than 20 mole % Fe203,
(b) a trap-llmited band conduction mechanism together wlth a
hOPPlng conduction mechanism for the glasses having Fe203
mole % between 20 and 30%,
(c) a diffusive conduccion mechanism together w~th a hopping
conduction mechanism for the glasses containing more than
30 mole % Fe203,
