Abstract
Conjunctivitis is the commonest eye disease in Egypt, where it presents a major problem of public health.
The aim of this work was to study the clinical picture of patients complaining of mucopurulent conjunctivitis and to detect the causative organisms. Patients attending to the Ophthalmic outpatient clinic of Alexandria University Hospital were examined ophthalmologically and one hundred cases diagnosed as mucopurulent conjunctivitis were collected for the study. Samples for bacterial cultures were taken by cotton swab. Bacteriological media used were blood agar and VCNchocolate agar. Bacteria isolated were identified by colonial appearance and microscopic appearance. Further studies of the biochemical activities were done when needed.
Out of the 100 cases studied, 5? cases had mild conjunctivitis, 50 had moderate and 1? had severe conjunctivitis. Incidence of mucopurulent conjunctivitis is age related ranging from 7^% of cases in the age group less than 10 years to 26% in persons older than 10 years. There was no significant difference in sex distribution.
Clinically, in cases of mucopurulent conjunctivitis, mucopurulent discharge, eyelid oedema, conjunctival hyperaemia and chemosis were prominant features with uniform trend of severe degree of conjunctivitis towards the younger age group.
