Abstract

Recently power consumption became a major design constraint.
_Battery powered portable applications is.a very obvious reason, but even for
applications where the supply is not a major constraint, a low-power solution
provides the added benefits of increased reliability and reduced packaging
costs.
In this thesis a 256-QAM adaptive decision-feedback equalizer (OFE) was
taken as a case study. Low power techniques were employed mainly at the
algorithmic and architectural levels. The essence of the work lies in the
implementation of two versions of architectures for adaptive equalizers. A
strength-reduced architecture was developed and compared to a traditional
cross-coupled architecture. The special case of a 256-QAM DFE was taken a
common benchmark to compare the two possible architectures, mainly from
a power perspective, based on actual implementation considerations and
actual operating conditions.
For prototypmg, an 8-1evel PAM DFE was chosen so as to demonstrate the
practical functionality of an adaptive DFE.
