Abstract The Fever and neutropenia are serious complications and are potentially fatal due to probability of developing serious infections, the infections are related to the time between fever and initiation of antibiotic therapy; thus failure to evaluate the condition promptly will lead to increased mortality. Of the most common causes of febrile neutropenia are haematological malignancie, e.g. myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms. In cases of febrile neutropenia with haematological malignancies blood stream infection is common. Blood cultures provide important information influencing the diagnosis and management of such infections. This study was peformed on 50 patients who were neutropenic and suffered from haematological malignanices under chemotherapy from Menoufiya University Hosptial. The blood samples were collected under complete aseptic condition from those patients for culture and sensitivity. Forty samples were taken from febrile neutropenic group and ten samples were taken from afebrile neutropenic group. Blood cultures were done by BACTEC 9050 system which monitors the growth.of organisms by measuring the production of Co2 with a fluorescent sensor. It was fully automated system with continuous monitoring, it reduced the time needed to detect positive cultures and decreased specimen handling. There was significant difference in ANC values in febrile neutropenic in comparison to afebrile neturopenic patients.
