Abstract

Preoperative apprehension, an aesthesia and surgery are stressful conditions leading to the release of stress horomones viz;corticosteroids,i catecholamines, glucagon and growth hormone with concomitant suppression of insulin release. These hormonal alterations lead to hyperglycaemia and to a state of glucose intolerance. The aim of this work was to assess the effects of two anaesthetic techniques on the tolerance to infused glucose during lower abdominal surgery. This study was conducted on twenty patients who were admitted to the main Alexandria University hospital. They were divided into two groups, patients each. The first group received general anaesthesia and the second group received spinal analgesia. They were clinically free except for their surgical conditions. They were randomly chosen as regards age,sex and body weight. For each patient the fasting blood glucose level was determined and a control glucose tolerance curve was drawn one day before the operation by infusing .
