Abstract

This work was undertaken to evaluate the pattern of eye diseases in children in the outpatient clinic of Assiut Univ. Hospital. 1016 children under the age of 12 were examined. This number represented 24.76% of all patients attending the outpatient clinic.-Conjunctivitis represented 81.4% of cases. The commonest type was bacterial conjunctivitis which was prevalent under the age of 6 and in the hot months. Bacteriological study showed that staphylococcus was the commonest organism in positive cases.-Lid disorders represented 4.92% of cases. Inflammation was the commonest disorders especially squamous blepharitis. -Corneal disorders represented 3.15% of cases. Corneal scarring was the commonest corneal disorders.-Disorders of the lens represented 2.76% of cases. Congenital cataracts was the commonest disorders. Cases of traumatic cataract was more prevalent in boys.-Buphthalmos represented 1.18% of cases. The highest number of cases was presented in the first 6 months of age Bilateral cases were more common that unilateral cases. Also it was more common in boys.-Uveal tract disorders represented 0.69% of cases. Iridocyclitis was the commonest disorders.-Lacrimal apparatus disorders represented 0.69% of cases. Dacryocystitis was the commonest disorders.-Manifest squint represented 1.77% of cases. Unilateral concomitant convergent squint was the commonest type squint among children in this study.-Congenital anomalies represented 3.54% of cases. Congenital cataract was the commonest congenital anomaly followed by buphthalmos.-Trouma represented 4.23% of cases. The highest incidence of cases was in the age group of 10-12 years. It was more prevalent in boys. Blunt trauma was the commonest type.-Cases of defective vision in this study represented 3.25% of cases congenital cataract was the commonest cause of defective vision followed by buphthalmos.
