Abstract For centuries, garlic has been used in traditional medical practice of many cultures to treat cardiovascular and otehr disorders. A lot of evidences were found by many investigators about the effect of garlic on blood coagulation, platelet aggregation, fibrinolytic activity, serum cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. This study was carried on 20 healthy male volunteers 20-40 years old. Five grams of whole raw garlic were given to each subject in the fasting state. The effect of garlic intake on pulse rate, blood pressure, plasma fibrinogen, plasma piasminogen, and fibrin degradation products levels were measured one hour after garlic intake. The results revealed that there were no significant change in pulse rate or systolic blood pressure one hour after garlic administrati on, on the other hand a significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure, highly significant reduction in plasma fibrinogen and highly significant increase in plasma plasminogen were found. |
