Abstract

Abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system may appear spontaneosly or a Icature of other systemic diseases. In elderly, autonomic dysfunction may occur jimary illness.
Patients with autonomic nervous system dysfunction may or may not have 1symptoms. After the introduction of the simple, safe and non-invasive tests of cardiovascular function, it became possible to examine cardiovascular autonomic [neuropathy. The present work was aimed to study the prevalence of autonomic nervous system dysfunction in healthy elderly subjects.
The study comprised 100 elderly subjects randomly selected from relatives of patients attending the outpatients clinics of Menuofia Faculty of Medicine. Fivtynine subjects were males and fourty one were females. Their age ranged from 61 to 85 yeats with a mean age of 69.61 ± 5.96. Ten healthy volanteres below age of 60 years (from 25 to 48 years ) were selected and considered to be a control grouup. Five subjects were males and five subjects were females.
All subjects were subjected to through history taking, clinical examinations to exclude diseasse which may affect the autonomic ncous system. The following st
cre used to assess the autonomic nervous system :-
* Tests to assess the parasympathetic nervous systems function
- Response of the heart rate to Valsalva maneuver.
- HR. variation with deep breathing.
- The immediate H.R. immediate H.R. response to standing.
* Tests toassess the sympathetic nervous system function:
- Response of blood pressure to standing.
- Response of diastolic blood pressure to sustained hand grip.
- Cold pressor test.
- Pupillary response to mydriatics.
