Abstract Large quantities of water are becoming more needed everyday to fulfill the continuously increasing requirements of mankind. This, in tum, necessitates to maximize the discharge obtained from a weir under a given head. The present work studies various parameters to increase the discharging capacity of weirs. To acheive this, it is suggested to use circular crested weirs instead of sharp crested ones. In this study, ten models having different vertex angles for different flow conditions were carried out in the hydraulic laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering in Ain Shams University to find the influence of the vertex angle of the circular crested weir on the discharge coefficient. Surface water profiles for different vertex angles were measured. Comparing the discharge coefficient of circular weirs of different vertex angles with a normal flat crested weir having the same height and D.S. slope, it was found that the proposed model gives a high discharge coefficient and thus a large discharge capacity. |
