Abstract Chronic sinusitis is a disease that afflicts a significant percentage of the population and cause considerable longterm morbidity [Bid et al., 19981.< There exists no real controversy about the bacteriology of acute sinusitis. Strept. Pneumoniae, H. influenzae and M catarrhalis are by far the most common pathogens in this acute infection [Wald, 1992-aj. However, in chronic sinusitis, bacteriological cultures show a greater variation [Van Cauwenberge et al., 1993j. Bacteriological study of chronic sinusitis not only helps us to understand sinusitis, but also plays an important role in selecting an appropriate antibiotic to treat it [Jiang et al., 1998j.The objective of this work was to study the bacterial aetiology of chronic maxillary sinusitis in different age groups in Menoufiya Govemorate, to estimate the antimicrobial susceptibility of aerobic and facultative anaerobic isolates against commonly used antibacterial agents and to evaluate the impact of different predisposing factors to chronicity including immunoglobulin deficiency. |
