Abstract

Until recently, anesthesiol ogist lacked the ability to monitor the effects of anesthetics on the brain in terms of ”depth” or ”adequacy” of ane sthesia.
it is believed that general anesth etics block consciousne ss by depres sing the central nervous system, electrical activity of the cerebral cortex can be measured using the
electro encephal ogram (EEG), some compone nts of the EEG are rel ate d to ade qua cy of ane sth esi a. BIS is the
fir st technology approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for marketi ng as an EEG-based
monitor for anesthet ic effect.
Entropy is another EEG –based monitor.
