Abstract This work aimed at studying the relation between level of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and NO in serum and ascitic fluid in cases of cirrhotic non- ascitic and ascitic patients with and without spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. This study included 40 subjects, 30 patients and 10 control healthy subjects. According to the clinical examination, laboratory findings and abdominal ultrasonography, the patients were classified into 3 groups as follows: Cirrhotic group without ascites: 10 patients with liver cirrhosis who were not complicated with ascites. They are 7 males and 3 females, with mean age of 46.1 ±6.67 years old. Cirrhotic group with sterile ascites: 10 patients with liver cirrhosis and ascites. Those patients are 6 males and 4 females with mean age of 44.5±6.77 years old. Cirrhotic group with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis: 10 patients with cirrhosis and ascites who developed SBP. Diagnosis of SBP was based on the following criteria: ascitic fluid polymorphonuclear cells(PMN) >250/mm3 and a compatible Clinical picture (abdominal pain and/or fever and/or unexplained encephalopathy. The possibility of secondary peritonitis was excluded in all patients via absence of clinical laboratory or radiological data suggesting it. Patients of this group are 7 males and 3 females with mean age of46.5±5.72 years old. |
