In recent years, many authors have suggested that epilepsy has been associated with increased oxidative stress, both in experimental animals, human adult and pediatric cases. This is probably a consequence of an imbalance between oxidant and anti-oxidant activity in vivo.
The current study was done to study the effect of oxidative stress on initiation and progression of epilepsy. where the following indirect parameters of oxidative stress were determined; superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase.
Sixty three children were included in this study; group I includes 38 epileptic children they were subdivided into 3 groups:
newly diagnosed epileptic children and didn’t receive any treatment yet ( group I-A ) ,epileptic children receiving treatment in the form of monotherapy(group I-B) and epileptic children receiving treatment in the form of polytherapy (group I-C) ,group 11 includes 25 healthy children served as controls.
group I-B were subdivided into I-B\l(patients receving VPA) and I-B\2 (patients receiving CBZ).
Group I is subdivided again into group I-a and group I-b depending on the state of epilepsy whether controlled (group I-a)or uncontrolled (group I-b).
