Abstract

Applied Anatomy of the Large Intesting
The colon may be considered in four parts: The ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid. ^
The ascending colon:
It begins at the caecum and ascends to the inface of the right lobe of the liver, here it bends abruptly forwards and to the left forming the right colic flexure
In surface projection it ascends to the right of
the right lateral plane, from the trans tubercular
(*•) planes. It is surrounded by peritoneum except
posteriorly where the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh, usually, the fourth lumbar artery and sometimes, the ilioinguinal and iliohypogastric nerves cross behind it. Anteriorly, it is in relation with the convolutions of the ileum, the right edge of the greater omentum and the abdominal wall. ^’
The right colic flexure;
It comprises the terminal part of the ascending colon and the commencement of the transverse colon, which turns downwards, forwards and to the left. ’
