Abstract

Bacteremia is defined as the presence of bacteria in the blood stream during life. In this context, it . may be transient and of no immediate clinical importance or persistent, represeting an infectious focus.
Septicemia defined ad the presence of bacteria
and their toxins in the blood stream with accompanying

fever and prostration. Thus, septicemia is usually
used as a clinical diagnosis and bacteremia as a labora¬tory finding.
Bacteria are present in the blood when the source is intravascular - e.g. septic thrombophlebitis and end¬ocarditis. In extra vascular infections, bacteria at the site of infection first must pass into lymphatics. The local lymph nodes swell when filtering bacteria, and can remove 33% of the bacteria presented to them. ’ Bacteria reach the blood after passing this barrier and after escaping the phagocytosis and digestion.
Bacteremia can be classified as primary or secondary on the basis of the presence of absence of a concurrent clinically recognizable source.
