Due to the current practice the engineers design the
structures to be strong enough to fulfil thier functions
without necessarily being able to predict the actual failure
loads of these structures.
The behaviour of the pitched roof portal frames is
profoundly effected by the diaphragm action (8, 9). The
deflections at the joints are decreased significantly and
consequently the bending moments. Thus the elastic critical
load plays a good part in determining the failure load. It
the aim of this work to determine the actual buckling
load for the pitched-roof frames taking into consideration
the effect of the cladding and the change in the geometrical
