Abstract

HCC shows striking variations in
incidence in different parts of the world and this variation is more closely related to socioeconomic, environmental and cultural factors than to geographical factors (Colombo, 1995; Schonland et al, 1979 and Paterlini et al, 1993). It was reported that the highest incidence occurs in Mozambique while the lowest occurs in Yugoslavia (Magrath and Litvak, 1993 and Sherlock, 1993). Liver cancer is the eighth most common tumor worldwide and in developing countries it is the seventh most common cancer for both sexes (Parkin et al, 1984). In 1983 there were over 250,000 new cases of liver cancer each year. By 1994, the estimated number of new cases worldwide rose from 500,000 to 1000,000 new HCC cases per year with an annual incidence rate of up to 500 cases per 100,000 subjects in certain regions of Asia and sub-Saharan AGica (Blum, 1994). HCC continues to be one of the most common malignant tumors in internal organs especially in Africa, the Eastern Asia and the South Pacific Island (Parkin et al, 1993).
