Abstract

As far as the freight transportation cost is concerned,
railway is considered to be the best transportation mode
especially for the strategic commodities which transported
with large quantities and for long distances. The turn-round
time is one of the most important items that must be studied
when making analysis for the unit train movement. This is due
to its direct effect on the transport cost for any commodity.
The main object of the thesis, therefore,is to introduce
some suggestions to reduce the turn-round for one of the
main strategic commodities in Egypt which is WHEAT. Actually,
wheat has been considered as one of the main products
transported by unit trains.
The thesis started with a brief review for the previous
studies in the same topic. As a conclusion, all of these
studies were concentrated only on determining the of turn
round time for different commodities. They also shown a great
difference between the actual and theoretical turn round
time. None of these studies went through the actual reasons
of this difference. Therefore, the thesis concentrates on the
analysis of reasons that increase the turn-round time and
consequently reduce the level of service for railway freight
transportation.
Data for this research were collected during November 1991
and detailed analysis for the turn-round time of wheat cars
had been made. Accordingly, some suggestions for the
reduction of the turn-round time were introduced.The effect
of th~se suggestions on the unit costs of wheat is also
addressed.As a result of these suggestions, a reduction about
28 \ in unit cost had been achieved. Finally, Some
recommendations were introduced for the reduction of the turn
and improvement of level of service for freight transport by
unit trains.
