Abstract

Epilepsy needs long-term treatment because of its chronic course and careful attention must be paid to the possible side effects of anticonvulsant drugs.
The present work was done on sixty epileptic patients and ten healthy volunteers as control group to assess the incidence of increase of some liver enzymes and creatine phosphokinase activity in the serum of epileptic patients before and after phenytoin therapy whether epileptic patients are controlled or non-controlled.
The material of this study would be divided into the following groups.
1- Ten healthy volunteers as control group. The mean
of their age was 19.5 years.
2- Twenty non-treated epileptic patients. The mean
of their age was 17.4 years and the mean of the
duration of the disease was 13.9 months.
2- Twenty controlled epileptic patients on long-term phenytoin therapy. The mean of their age was 18.3 years and themean of the duration of the disease was 9»65 years.
