Abstract Economic loss from accidents is high. The American National Safety Council estimates that the over all costs of accidents in 1977 were 62 billion dollars which includes wage losses, medical expenses, insurance administrative costs, and property damage from moving vehicular accidents. In 1970 there were an estimated 50,230,000 injuries of all varieties in the United States with 114,000 accidental death. These fatalities exceed the ten-years total for Vietnam war, head injury follow only heart disease, neoplasm and stroke (2) as a leading cause of death. The actual number of death which occurs annualy in the United States although is not known. An estimated 400,000 head injuries occur yearly which cause coma, posttraumatic amnesia or skull fracture. In one study, it was reported that in more than 12,000 patient with head injuries admitted to the Universit; of Virginia Hospital, 21$ had severe craniocerebral trauma, 24$ had moderate craniocerebral trauma and 55$ had minor craniocer¬ebral trauma. It is estimated that 60$ of the patients with head injuries die before hospital admission. In the United Kingdom the number of patients admitted to hospital suffering from a head injury has reached epiedemic (4) proportion. In 1972 the figure was 142,000.
