Abstract The estimation of treatment needs is an important stage in oral health care planning. One of the first steps in planning dental services is therefore the collection of up-to-date information on the prevalence of oral and pharyngeal diseases in a given population. With this information it is possible to assess fllturl’ treatment needs for services. ” Several factors have been related to oral and pharyngeal malignancy II1cluding genetic predisposition. socioeconomic status. gender. life style: and occupation. Quality of life for malignancy patients was influenced mainly with the stage and treatn)ent modality. This research was oarried out to study oral and pharyngeal malignancies regarding incidence trend of the disease. survival, and to assess the patient’s quality of lite. The study was conducted in the Faculty of Medicine, Maxillofacial department-Faculty of Dentistry, Health Insurance main hospital, Medical Research Institute’ Statistics department, and Damanhour Oncology center. All oral and pharyngeal cancer patients in Alexandria and El Behira from January 1991 to December 2000 were included. Data were collected by means of a structural form. and an interview questionnaire was used to collect QOL data from 171 living subjects. The whole task was achieved from January 2001 up to \larch 2002. . The results of the present study revealed the following: . I. Oral malignancy cases represented 58.5 , as 41.5 were pharyngeal. About two .thirds oe10nged to 30 - > 60 years old category. and about one fourth were in the 60> 75 ag~ category. |
