Abstract

Electric power quality problems have gained increased attention in recent years. One of the premium services being considered by many utilities is an enhanced power quality service. This service will provide a higher level of power quality for customers with equipment sensitive to voltage variation. Power quality problems evidence themselves in a variety of ways such as computer shutdown, malfunction or errors, and variable speed drives tripping out. These can give problems ranging from inconvenience to loss of manufacturing capability with substantial loss in income.
‎Power system harmonics problem is one of the major fields of study by power quality engineers. Control of these harmonics is their final target. Moreover, large customers tend to install power factor correction capacitors because of the associated cost saving. While this is advantageous to both the customers and electricity suppliers, incorrect application of capacitors can lead to equipment damage.
‎The aim of this thesis is to:
1. ‎give a general overview about the power quality issues, with special concern on power system harmonics,
‎ii. give a comprehensive study about the effect of power capacitors installations in power systems, and
‎Hi. suggest a new strategy for the optimum utilization of both power factor correction capacitors and power system harmonic filters.
‎Basic equations used in the aforementioned strategy are derived and explained and the solution algorithm is introduced in details. The idea is based on both technical and economical considerations. Maximum saving and satisfactory operation have been considered. Application and comparative study are given and proved the effectiveness of the proposed method.
