Abstract In recent years, considerable research has focused on the use ogeosynthetics to improve soil properties. However, most of this research did not address the case of using geogrid to bridge weal spots to improve the bearing capacity of the foundation soils. This case may be found in the form of a finite extend of very soft material such as a pocket of organic soil, a cavern in limestone or a spot of man-made fill in new areas. Using reinforcement to bridge weak spots in foundation soil is often more economical than excavating and removing them practically if these weak spots are at relatively large depths. In this research the effect of the reinforcement to bridge the weak spots in foundation soil is investigated through an experimental plane strain model. A finite element code (PLAXIS) is then used to verify and compare the results. The used foundation soil is sand while a sponge is used to model the weak spot. Geogrid reinforcement is used throughout the research program to study the following parameters: |
