Abstract

The present work aims at studying the effect of some of the variables such as solution flow rate, electrode surface roughness, current density, NaCl concentration and the presence of additives such as drag reducing polymers and surfactants on the performance of an electrochemical reactor which produces sodium hypochlorite by the electrolysis of NaCl solution. The performance of the reactor was assessed by determining: (i) hypochlorite yield (ii) cell current efficiency and (iii) electrical energy consumption in k.W.h/kg. A rectangular undivided cell with a graphite anode and Ni plated steel cathode was used to conduct the present study.
The following results are expressed in terms of the electrical energy consumption of the reactor which indicates the performance of the reactor. The lower the energy consumption the better the performance of the reactor and vice versa:
(1) Increasing current density increases energy consumption of
hypochlorite production.
(2) Increasing NaCl concentration reduces energy consumption.
(3) Increasing solution flow rate increases electrical energy
consumption.
Increasing electrode surface roughness reduces electrical
energy consumption.
