Abstract Knowledge-Based Expert Systems (as a branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications) are emerging as means of automating the solution of problems that have resisted to be formalized as algorithms_ This thesis describes the development of a Knowledge-Based Expert System for automation the design process of industrial steel buildings_ The design includes layout of the proposedprocess structural configurations, analysis and design of these configurations, and evaluation of alternatives_ This evaluation is performed on a number of criteria to reach the optimal solution_ The Knowledge-Based Expert System is implemented in PROLOG and C language _ PROLOG is selected because it encounters both declarative and procedural capabilities_ The heuristic knowledge is implemented as PROLOG rules and facts _ The PROLOG inference engine with its backward chaining capability along with some control aspects is used to control the flow of the system_ The analysis is performed in C language for its algorithmic capability |
