Abstract

In 1941 Sigerist, the medical historian stated that ”the people health ought to be the concern of people themselves. They must struggle for it and plan for it. The war against and for health cannot be fought by physician alone. people’s war in which the entire population must be mobilized permanently”. The aim of the study was to determine the level of acceptance of the urban and rural Jeddah communi ty of the services delivered by their primary health care center. To deter.mine the level of awareness, acceptance and practice of community participation amongst the community member and primary heal th care team members in Jeddah region. The research consists of conducting a series of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) study in Jeddah Region, on three types of categories namely: Community members in the catchment area of the selected primary health care centers, the health team members working in these health centers and the community leaders. The sample was selected by stratified ~ltistage random sampling technique. Stratification was done on a geographical basis which result in random selection of one district from rural area and three districts from urban area.. Random selection of four primary health care center from each district was done yielding a total sample of sixteen primary health care center. The health team study was conducted on all the team members of the selected PHC canters, their total number amounted to 434. The size of the community sample was planned to be double the size of the health team for each of the selected center, the final sample size was 859 individuals selected randomly from the catchment area of each of the chosen center. The sample size of the community leaders was fixed at four persons from each of the se~ected centers and accordingly the final sample size was 64 individuals. The sample size of top decision makers ~ounted to 11 individuals. A set of three questionnaires were developed for each category. The result of the KAP study about PHC and community participation concept among the three category samples in Jeddah region showed the following. I. Knowl edge: ­ A. Communi ty members:­ The majority of the community sample showed good mowledge about obstacles preventing community participation md moderate knowledge about other items particularly in the essentiality of the maternal care services in PHC centers (92.2), importance of the attendance to the well baby clinic 91. 9, awareness of the existence of the friends health committee, importance of community participation 87.1, Realizing how to improve health condi tions in communi ty 85.9 . Better knowledge was exhibited by male community m~ers and the non-Saudi members. B. Heal th Team Members:­ Maj ori ty of the heal th team members showed moderate knowledge about elements of PHC in which communi ty can participate (99.8) importance of community participation for the success of PHC activities 87.1, essentiality of community participation in planning and evaluation 78.8 and 72 .1 respectively and definition of PHC 63.6.
