Abstract

Self-management practice is defined as ”those behaviors ’ch minimize the frequency and severity of attacks, izize the dysfunction caused by asthma and promote Umum participation in normal acti vi ties. ” The self­ qement behavior consists of many categories namely; ing actions to prevent infections, removing allergic stances, engaging in breathing exercises, making accurate sessments of severity, taking appropriate actions based on se assessments and seeking information about asthma. Uerparental and childre~’s management skills can result improvement in aspects of children’s school performance, dal adjustment and participation in physical activities. yalso reduce stressful impact of asthma on the child and 5 parents and decrease health care utilization. The aim of this work was to study asthma-management factors affecting it of a group of asthmatic and their parents in Alexandria. The study was carried out in the students Health Hospital and El-Shatby pediatric University Data were collected from 500 asthmatic children years and 500 of their parents. t:I’II ~e tools used were child’s interview questionnaire, ’ents’ interview questionnaire and review of the health rd of the child. These tools were developed to obtain following data: socioeconomic knowledge background, family’s management behavior and other nitive variables such as: health locus of control; health luei health belief model and self-efficacy, in addition to tress symptoms index and health care utilization. The results obtained in this study could be summarized . About 55.6 of the children were males and 44.4 were females. More than half of the sample were from families of low socioeconomic status, while 32.2 and 13.2 were from families of middle and high social classes respectively. Most of the sample (68.6) had bronchial asthma for five years or more.
