Abstract

This study is concerned with the synthesis of water-soluble nonionic polyacrylamide and its application in the purification of the industrial wastewater from the suspended clay particles. This study explicated through this thesis in five chapters.
The first one is the theoretical part which discusses the different general methods used for treatment of industrial wastewater, classification of colloids present in the industrial wastewater and its problems, liquid-solid separation processes for suspended solid treatment, general flocculation mechanisms, flocculant types, factors affecting flocculation process, and the major area of applications of flocculants. Also, the general methods for manufacturing polyacrylamide, and flocculation of clay suspension using polymeric flocculants were discussed.
The second chapter is the experimental part and begins with illustration of specification of the raw materials used in this work, followed by description of the experimental apparatus used, experimental technique, and the operating variables considered in the present study.
The third chapter shows the results and discussion of the experimental work to obtain the recommended conditions for preparation of polyacrylamide flocculant using the solution polymerization technique, characterization of the obtained polymer, and the optimum application conditions for both the laboratory jar test and batch cylinder tests which are used to assess the effectiveness of the prepared flocculant and the comparable commercial Magnafloc7025 nonionic flocculants.
The higher flocculation performance was achieved using the polymer that was prepared using 6% monomer concentration, O.OOlM-initiator concentration, and 55min polymerization time at 50°C. The relative viscosity for the stock solution (0.5%) of this polymer measured at 25°C equal 45.
