Abstract

Coronary heart disease is emerging as a prominent public health problem in the developing countries. It is clearly associated with life-style and behavior. The Health Belief Model is a theoretical framework that helps to predict patient behavior. In simplest terms, the Model specifies that health-related behavior is more likely among people who feel suseptible (perceived susceptibility) to a health problem which they perceive as serious (perceived severity), who feel the behavior is likely to have beneficial effects (perceived benefits) that outweight the costs of the behavior (perceived barriers), and who are exposed to ”cues” for the behavior. The present study was designed to assess knowledge, beliefs and behavior.of the coronary heart disease patients through the application of the Health Belief Model. The study was carried out in four selected hospitals in Alexandria. Data were collected from 400 coronary patients admitted in six months to Gamal abdel Naser, Rass El-Tein , The Main University and El-Moasat hospitals. The method used was a questionnaire developed to obtain the following data: socioeconomic characteristices patient past history and family history, patient’s knowl edge and behavior related to their disease, Health Belief Model dimentions and patient’s intention to comply with rehabili tation regimen. The results obtained in this study could be summerized as follows: - The mean age for the studied coronary patients was 55.88 t 10.6 years and 69.5 of them were males. - More than half of the sample (57.75) were of low socio economic status, while 27.25 and 15 were of middle and high socioeconomic status respectively. The majority of the sample were low educated (77.5 illiterates, could read and write and primary education), while secondary and university education constituted 10.25 and 12.25 of the total sample respectively.
