Abstract

The petroleum industry’s history provides ample evidence of the destructive nature of lightning activity and the resulting fires. Millions of dollars of petroleum products and facilities are destroyed each year by lightning related phenomena in many parts of the world. Each year many people are lost as the direct result of being in personal proximity to these facilities. When lightning may occur, it is true that the risk of losing one tank of product is relatively small, but it is also true that the loss of one tank and its contents in our country will pay defnitly for the protection of all the petroleum storage facilities in the country. It is the objective of this thesis to design a safe, reliable and less expensive lightning protection system.
The study concentrates on the different possible protection systems with comparison to reach the best effective type at a moderate cost. Tne investigations made to decide lightning protection for petroleum structures demanded us to evaluate the risk assessment value. It is possible to develop a hybrid lightning protective system with minimum cost (high economical benefit). The theoretical investigation enabled us to conclude that it is not essential to protect fixed rooftanks or metallic roof structures bul it is very important to improve considerably its ground system. It was also possible to reach a very good point that flic iprcftectwS •fjiRWrce •rrrCTCiiK;* Y1} ;m;^raf;i7if. l’ne xr, ”Jirrnvnu’i ’’H-I^TR Yip 7o fi maximum distance of 45.7 m. After this value as the height increases the protected distance decreases. This is of great value from the economical point of view.
Two computer programs were developed using Matlap technique to solve the designed problem, to reach the optimum solution with the minimum cost. This was done by the less time ofcxctution although (ho number of iterations was tremendous .
