Abstract

A service life of 80 to 100 years is generally assumed for a reinforced
concrete structure. During that period, it has to meet many different
requirements, not all of which may be known during the design phase.
Changes in utilization, damages or construction defects may mean that
some bearing capacity and /or rigidity parameters have to be increased
before a structure is fit for use again.
Many different strengthening methods are available, such as adding of
unstressed or pre-stressed steel, installation of external prestressed
reinforcement, bonded reinforcement, increase of the concrete crosssection,
with or without additional reinforcement (concrete sprayed-on,
placed conventionally or bonded as a precast member) etc. Consideration
must be given to whether the areas to be strengthened are subjected to
compressive, tensile or shear stress and whether the necessary measures
relate to stability, fitness for use and/or fatigue safety. In addition cost,
time, quality and maintenance parameters have to be taken into
consideration. It is the engineer’s responsibility to find the ideal method to
strengthen the structures needing rehabilitation.
The scope of this research is to have an optimum usage of building
materials used for strengthening. This is achieved by selecting the right
method of strengthening. Where a comparison with the help of software is
carried out taking into consideration the different parameters related to
cost, time, quality control, constructability, long term durability and
maintenance, to select the optimum strengthening method.
